It’s that time of year again. The Student Transportation Unit has sent verification lists to schools to confirm services for the next school year. If your transportation needs change for next year (you move, using a caregiver, enrolled in a new program, decide not to use the service, want to use transportation etc.), please let the school know as soon as possible. It is important that we get that information in a timely manner, so our planning unit has time to make adjustments to routes and to minimize changes for September.

Did you know that historically we receive 60% of changes in September after the bus routes are already set up! This simply means that the bus routes are constantly changing in September, and families do not get that consistency of service we hope to provide. Please help us ensure a smoother start to the school year by confirming your child’s transportation details with the school as soon as possible.

The “SCHOOL BUS LOADING ZONE” is delineated by white regulatory signs that set the limits of the bus zone area that a school-bus stops within. The driver of a school-bus must stop the bus close to the right-hand curb or roadway edge between the signage arrows. The driver is required to stop the bus on the same side of the road these signs are posted and it is illegal for a school bus to unload passengers on the opposite side of the road from the marked school-bus loading zone. Bus drivers cannot operate the flashing lights or stop arm within a school-bus loading zone.

At school sites, remember it is imperative that bus loading zone areas are kept clear for school bus usage. Be respectful of the “School Bus Loading Zones”, enforcement penalties may be levied for non-bus drivers that utilize this space.

The most dangerous time on any school bus ride is getting on and off the school bus. Young children are not aware of traffic and easily distracted. Please ensure that all bus arrivals and departures have staff to supervise and direct students through the busy loading zone and onto their school bus or the school property.

Winter has arrived and with it inclement weather that may force the closure of schools and/or the cancellation of bus service. Staff in Transportation Services are on alert when snow storms are forecasted. Early in the morning Consortium transportation staff review if roads are passable, and the current and predicted temperatures & weather conditions across the City. Contact is made with bus carriers regarding concerns they may have regarding road conditions for the safety of their drivers and possibility of buses not starting due to extreme cold temperatures. A decision is made regarding the cancellation of bus service and a recommendation is made to the Directors of both Boards who ultimately make the decision to cancel transportation. When inclement weather is forecasted parents should listen to radio & television stations for a public service announcement which will inform parents about school closures and transportation cancellations.

Parents & schools can check the TDSB, TCDSB, or TSTG web sites to see if a notice has been posted regarding cancellation of transportation or contact the bus carrier directly to find out if bussing has been cancelled.

Bus delays are reported on the Consortium website and are updated by our transportation providers on an on-going basis. If parents are concerned about inclement weather, they have the right to keep their child at home (especially in the case of medically fragile students or students who currently are on the bus for extended length of time) even if transportation is not cancelled by the School Board.

The travel time for students may easily double or triple depending on how the weather has impacted traffic in the city. Children should be dressed appropriately for the colder weather, in the event of an unexpected mechanical problems with the bus which may occur more frequently at this time of the year. You can also review more information on Winter Safety at Bus Stops on the TDSB, TCDSB, TSTG web site on the Transportation page.

Walking is a legitimate way for students of all ages to get to and from their local schools. It not only helps promote physical fitness for our students but contributes to their overall wellbeing. We understand that it may not be practical for all families but we want to encourage as many families as possible to take up this active transportation as a means to support healthy children. Many families do not consider walking a viable choice but we are here to assist you in addressing those concerns. In many cases supervision is a primary reason why students are not allowed to walk to school. Our school staff can assist those in need to connect these families with others in their neighbourhoods who are walking. Please stay tuned as we work towards a walk/ride share program to help schools help families makes these connections. We support the creation of ‘school travel plans’ that help identify obstacles in the community and working with various stakeholders including the city to begin to address those concerns. Most of all we want to share how families are making walking to school a choice as part of their normal working day. There is no shortage of information that is available to assist you in identifying ways to make active transportation a viable choice for families and we have highlighted a number of these resources below. What’s stopping you from letting your children walk to and from school? Let us know, we will work with our community partners to address those concerns and make walking a viable, safe, and healthy means for our students to get to and from school.

When walking or wheeling, travel with friends, family or in groups.

When crossing the street, obey signalized traffic commands and crossing guard instructions.

Use the sidewalk where provided. Children up to 13 years of age may ride their bikes on City sidewalks.

As of September 8th, 2025 all school buses will be running. Companies continue to report a driver in every seat so we are good for full resumption of service on Monday. We strongly suggest you check your transportation information on the transportation portal prior to Monday to confirm transportation arrangements. Please note that the first few weeks often experience some delays until parents and drivers are in a routine. We ask that parents have their children at their stop 5 minutes prior to scheduled time to minimize the possibility of delays. Bus companies should be posting any delay if it is more than 10 minutes on the portal.

I don’t remember my first day of school but I can only imagine the excitement and the trepidation that I must have felt. Standing there waiting for the school bus to show and then boarding that huge yellow vehicle filled with people I didn’t know and leaving my parents behind. Thank goodness for my big sister to show me the ropes.

Not everyone may have a big brother or sister to help them on their first day so we have a number of suggestions to help reduce the stress associated with those first day jitters for both the students and parents.

Talk to your child about travelling to and from school each day.

♣ Tell me about how I will get to school: Will I walk? Will you drive me? Will I take the school bus?

♣ Remind me each day how I will get home and who will pick me up.

♣ Walk or drive me to school before the first day to show me the way.

♣ Teach me to wait for the bus on the side walk, well back from the road.

♣ When the bus stops and the door opens, show me how to climb up the steps and hold onto the railing.

♣ Remind me to behave, listen to the driver and sit quietly.

♣ Teach me to recognize my regular stop. I should only get off the bus here.

♣ Teach me how to get off the bus safely. I should watch the driver for the okay and look all ways before I cross the street.

♣ I should tell the driver I see who is to meet me and walk to the person who is picking me up.

Best of luck on your first day of school!

“Labor Day is a glorious holiday because your child will be going back to school the next day. It would have been called Independence Day, but that name was already taken.” ~Bill Dodds
